In 1927, Wlérick used a professional model when working on the half life-sized sculpture (65 cm high) titled Gaby. Around 1932 or 1933, Wlérick reworked the piece, giving it the name The Offering. He made a bronze edition limited to ten.
In 1936, the city of Paris asked Raymond Escholier, the curator of the fine arts museum at the Petit Palais, to oversee the sculpture commissions for the 1937 international exposition. Commissioned, Wlérick enlarged his piece to life-size and changed the title to Reclining Nude.
“Take, for example, The Offering, in which he [Wlérick] unites the severe architecture of a right angle with the gracious movement of the legs, the weight of the torso, and the incline of the head, inviting viewers to make a circuit of the work and establish a sort of motion.”
